Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of preventable blindness. The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends a retinal exam for Type 1 diabetic patients starting 3-5 years after diagnosis and yearly after. Type 2 diabetic patients should have a retinal exam at the time of diagnosis and at least yearly after.
